7 Stages ofRemote Living

From location-dependent to network society member

Stage 1

Location Dependent

Two weeks off, a year of routine.

The starting point: a fixed job, a fixed home, and limited flexibility. Life is organized around offices, commutes, and two weeks of vacation. Remote Life feels out of reach.

Stage 2

Remote Ready

I have the freedom… but I'm not using it.

A flexible job exists, but the lifestyle hasn't shifted. People dream of working elsewhere but remain anchored to one place. The freedom is theoretical, not yet practiced.

Stage 3

Workcationer

I travel a few months a year while working.

Here the testing begins: 2–6 months away, usually in Airbnbs or short-term rentals. Routines start to form, but the lifestyle still feels temporary, an experiment.

Stage 4

Digital Nomad

I live in different places for longer stretches.

Stays stretch into months. The lifestyle becomes serious. Logistics, visas, taxes, healthcare surface as challenges. Community connections deepen, but so does the craving for structure.

Stage 5

Multi-Local

I rotate between 2–4 home bases a year.

Remote Life finds rhythm. Familiarity builds across hubs, friends are seen regularly, life slows down. Movement is intentional, not restless. This is a new form of stability.

Stage 6

Family First

We're doing this with kids and loved ones.

Remote Life expands to include schools, healthcare, and housing. Families mix decentralized education with mobility, finding hubs that support children and aging parents alike.

Stage 7

Network Society

The remote life, across a full lifespan.

This is where Remote Life becomes collective. Families, elders, and travelers co-exist in intentional communities. Infrastructure, ownership, and governance evolve to match mobility. The endpoint is no longer the individual's needs but the society.
